Dorchester

New Infill Sustainable and Multi-generational Dwellings

The site is currently accessed via Abingdon Road and stretches down to the banks of River Thames. The length of the site towards the river spans 260 meters in length and 23 meters in width. The site is open with extensive areas of wild grasses and mixture of mature trees. A selection of mature trees located at the forefront of the site as well as within the sloping banks of River Thames will be preserved and reinforced.

The first infill dwelling is set back from Abingdon Road and aligns to the dwelling at 55 Abingdon Road. It’s a 4 bed property of 324sqm with an additional storey for two bedrooms, play room and bathroom. It incorporates playful roof pitches with round window openings as seen in surrounding properties. The dwelling is clad in varied brickwork courses to reference local precedents found in the village of Dorchester with vertical timber panels in parts. It includes a series of overhangs and deep exterior window reveals to increase shading and reduce solar gains.

The new dwellings have been developed with a strong contextual and sustainable narrative that locates the houses in the beautiful site to maximize various views, natural light and integrate the various areas of landscaping with the internal spaces.

Furthermore the project allows the opportunity to explore what a new house could be, with an approach to sustainable living, home working and also a considered multi-generational family dwelling.

The second infill dwelling adjacent to River Thames of 391sqm is all ground floor 5 bed property with generous circulation space that factors in the adaptation of the house to comply with Part M (2). The roof pitches take precedent from the traditional surrounding context by incorporating vertical timber batons to highlight the form and bring attention to their height despite being a low rise building. The facade is clad in dark timber panels and gray concrete clay roof tiles.
