We have proposed a house that will blend seamlessly with its surroundings as it steps gently down the location’s natural topography thus softening the visual impact from the garden. Orientated towards the sun for passive solar gain, the rooms of this new home will be flooded with light all day.
Conceptually, the house is designed as having a tactile carved out ground floor from the ground using white concrete to create spaces. White concrete wall that wraps around the ground floor creating the spaces will also form a retaining wall to the rear garden and courtyard. A lighter metal clad element sits and cantilevers above this with a double height glazed entrance space. The form of the house creates different external gardens and privacy for the bedrooms at first floor. The cantilever is supported by a concrete structure that is also seating and fireplace.
The plan also allows for the house to have two distinct material treatments at first floor, the Northern and Western elevations have a closer and more protective Brass metal veil that folds around the house with a series of brass metal blades. The western elevation has the blades opening up as shading to the
corridor and gallery glazing. High level windows to the bedrooms internally will allow evening sun to pass through the facade and into the rooms.
The metal veil and vertical cladding at first floor are inspired by and is a physical interpretation of the trees and patter-nation in the wood to the East, the light dappling through will replicate that of the woodland floor. The brass will also go a lovely hue over time. Further blending the house into the landscape and context.
As a foil to the brass veil the Southern and Eastern elevations are more glazed, this allows for views towards the wood from the bedrooms and the living spaces to benefit from passive solar energy. The master bedroom balcony providing shading to the outdoor spaces in peak summer. To further the view and connection to the landscape the master bedroom has a corner glass window area, this allows the garden to come right up to the bedroom space. Along with glazed sections the bathrooms will have areas of vertical metal cladding. However, these areas along with the bedroom balconies will have a brass metal perforated screen to allow for privacy.
The use of vertical and horizontal glass slots is carried throughout the house, separating the brass
cladding from the White concrete chimney and walls and at the entrance to flood the space with light.
The house is currently on site with completion in 2025.
