Langton Way

The conceptual narrative for the proposal has been developed through various iterations with the client, brief and the approach to the site and context. This has produced a site specific series of spaces that sit comfortably on the site, and respond to the orientation, main house and views on the site. The proposal aims to provide a quiet place to work, and engage in wellbeing activities that a growing family and home working routines require.

The scheme has been envisaged as a series of timber pavilions in the garden, this manifests into three spaces linked by a glazed colonnade. Each space houses a specific function and use. The spaces have been arranged to sit amongst the retained trees and to allow space between them. This is a more
sensitive approach than one larger mass or volume in the garden.

The layout and spaces are located to the bottom right of the garden covering the plot of the existing shed and storage area. This allows the spaces to benefit from southern sun light and to maximize the garden and distance to the existing house. Furthermore the scheme frames the trees and creates two areas of landscaping.

The three main spaces are split into a shower, WC space, a gym/yoga studio and a home working office.

As a journey through and into the new spaces, one can enter from the road to the side of the house or from the main house and garden. The entranceway from the road is envisaged as a more public and formal entrance that would be used by owners clients. The garden entrance would be the more
informal from the house via a planted access way. The formal entrance arrives into a top lit space with coat storage, and the shower/WC to the right. The gym is located to the left with a larger window that provides a view down across a new wild flower garden and to the house. The informal entrance is along the glazed link colonnade, which faces the new courtyard garden that sits between the wet functions and the new office space. The courtyard garden forms a Japanese garden inspired space with a new
acacia and landscaping.

The courtyard provides a restful private area that can be viewed from the house through the colonnade or from the large window seat in the office.
